Perspective Leads to Success

ABOUT

Next Shift is a multi-media, hockey platform created by former players - for the sports and professional world.

We founded Next Shift to inspire; by sharing the defining stories and lessons-learned of those who have not only faced, but conquered the challenges that the game and life, inevitably presents to us all. More specifically: we describe the unique experiences and impact that playing the game had on us - particularly as we stepped off the ice and into the office - and what we discovered in the transition. Each story shared aims to shows how adversity faced as an athlete can mold and create the proper mindset and skills to help us find and reach our post-sports goals and dreams as professionals, innovators and leaders.

Because we know how difficult it can be - whether it was that healthy scratch for the big playoff game that would have defined a career or a recently lost job - and we firmly believe that within all hockey players lies a shared DNA that gives us the strength to never give up, to always be looking and ready for the next shift.  Because it's not just stories, it's not just a game, it's our lives.

Our platform is here to equip each other to take on every opportunity, by leveraging that adversity, those lessons-learned, the friendships made and reestablishing that 'athletes mindset' to win the game of life.

Best Hockey Pod in the Game

Because there is life after the lights go out! Great job fellas. Keep 'em coming!

A Rink of It's Own

Honest conversations with outstanding guests about the game of hockey and life after. You won’t hear more candid, meaning conversations with top notch former/current players and coaches from every level about the journey that maybe has you hanging up the skates in one aspect, but never truely giving up the game in another. They fill a void in the sports podcast world, specifically hockey, with this one.

Former Chiclets Guy

Used to be a Chiclets guy .... NEXT SHIFT is Elite content , regardless of your hockey background the show is a MUST listen .... top of my charts for podcasts for sure #nextshiftnation

Great podcast, content, guests, and stories

Very enlightening podcast that gives a new twist on the normal hockey podcast, focusing on life lessons and making the difficult transition from being at the rink everyday to “normal everyday life”

Very Helpful for Athletes

Life after sports is tough when you’ve dedicated your life to it. It’s super helpful in hearing different career paths and choices people make after hockey, and all sports.

Waterloo Blackhawks, Where Are They Now: George Hughes & The Next Shift

Former Black Hawks defenseman George Hughes found a pathway to hockey’s highest level after his playing career was over. From Waterloo in 2008/09, he advanced to St. Lawrence University for four years, then spent a season in the minor leagues. Next, Hughes joined the production team at NBC Sports. The list of guests willing to share their experiences has already been impressive. Superstars like Ray Bourque, Mike Richter, and Jeremy Roenick accomplished almost everything imaginable during...

Sean Coffey & George Hughes are Guests of The Hockey Think Tank Podcast

Sean Coffey & George Hughes guest start on The Hockey Think Tank, Ep 184 to talk about how they teamed up to start Next Shift to share stories of great people in the hockey world both during their careers and afterwards. We tackle some awesome subjects like: - Playing to play vs. playing for expectations and external rewards - Handling pressure - "Playing the game" vs "Thinking the game" - Lessons for life after hockey We get vulnerable and share stories to put things into perspective...

Former players on to ‘The Next Shift’

"The Next Shift" is a hockey podcast started by the Coffey brothers and Hughes – all three former hockey players – that focuses on former players lives after hockey and what they are doing in their "next shift" in life. Earlier that morning, along with close friend George Hughes, the Coffey brothers had just finished interviewing Boston Bruins legend...

Next Shift on BHN: Cassidy lauds Bruins leaders Chara and Bergeron

Anytime Boston Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy talks about the game of hockey, the chances are very good that you’re going to learn something. That was the case again this week as Cassidy had an hour-long conversation about his background, coaching the Bruins and his likes and dislikes as a coach while a guest on the “Next Shift Hockey Podcast.” The roughly hour-long conversation was worth a listen from beginning-to-end, but the story...
